Privacy Policy

IoTiq (“we”, “us”, “our”) supplies smart home and office systems, shipped across Canada. IoTiq is a Canadian business based in Nova Scotia and operates iotiq.ca. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why, who we share it with, how long we keep it and how to reach us about it. We handle personal information in line with Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

Device Data: It Depends on What You Use

Where your device data lives depends on the products and features you use:

  • Devices on their own (for example a package set up with Apple Home, Google Home or Home Assistant, or cameras recording to local storage): where the device supports it, data is processed and stored in your home or business, and IoTiq does not receive it. Watching camera video away from home sends it over the internet to your phone.
  • The IoTiq app (early access): the app is built on Home Assistant and connects to it through the IoTiq Connector. To let you see and control your property from anywhere, device names, states, activity history and the commands you send are transmitted to and stored on IoTiq’s servers. Automations that must keep working offline run locally in Home Assistant.
  • IoTiq Intelligence (optional AI features, early access): if you turn it on, the questions you ask and the relevant device and activity data are processed in the cloud, which may include an AI service provider acting on our behalf. It is off unless you turn it on, and you can turn it off at any time.

Some products also depend on the manufacturer’s own cloud service and account — for example remote control of Google Nest or ecobee thermostats through their apps, or a camera maker’s optional cloud backup. The manufacturer handles that data under its own privacy policy, not this one. Before you buy, ask us and we’ll confirm in writing which features of each product rely on a cloud service.

Information We Collect

  • Order information: name, shipping and billing address, email, phone number and order details, collected to fulfil and ship your order. Card details are entered directly with our payment provider.
  • Contact form, consultation and early-access requests: your name, email and whatever you choose to tell us about your property, devices or goals.
  • IoTiq app account (early access): your name, email, the properties and rooms you set up, your devices and their states, activity and command history, and support diagnostics you choose to send us. IoTiq support staff do not have standing access to your property.
  • Website analytics: we use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used (pages visited, approximate location, device and browser type). We do not sell this data.

How We Use Your Information

To process and ship orders, answer consultation and support requests, send order-related communications, manage warranty and return claims, meet our tax and accounting obligations, and — only if you opt in — send occasional product updates. You can unsubscribe from updates at any time. We do not sell or rent your personal information.

Who We Share It With

We share personal information only with service providers who help us run the business, and only what they need:

  • Payment provider — to process payments. IoTiq does not store your full card details.
  • Shipping carriers — your name, address and phone number, to deliver your order.
  • Google Analytics — website usage data, as described above.
  • Our web hosting and email providers — to host this website and send and receive email.
  • Cloud hosting and AI providers — to run the IoTiq app and, only if you turn it on, IoTiq Intelligence.

Some of these providers store data outside Canada, including in the United States, where it may be accessible to authorities under local law. We may also disclose information where the law requires it.

How Long We Keep It

  • Order and invoice records: six years from the end of the tax year they relate to, as required by the Canada Revenue Agency.
  • Contact, consultation and support messages: up to 24 months after our last exchange with you, unless they relate to an order or warranty claim.
  • Early-access and mailing-list sign-ups: until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove you.
  • IoTiq app data: while your account is active. When you delete a property or your account, we delete or anonymise its data, except where we must keep records by law or until they age out of our backups.
  • Google Analytics data: no longer than 14 months.

After these periods we delete or anonymise the information.

Cookies

Our website uses cookies for essential functions (such as your shopping cart) and for Google Analytics. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; essential features such as the cart may not work without them. You can also opt out of Google Analytics with Google’s opt-out browser add-on.

Security

We use HTTPS across the site and limit access to personal information to the people who need it to serve you. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.

Your Rights

You can ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, withdraw consent to optional uses (such as marketing email), or ask us to delete it, subject to legal retention requirements such as tax records. Email info@iotiq.ca and we will respond within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
