Security & Privacy
Where your data lives depends on what you use.
Devices and Home Assistant keep working on your own network. The IoTiq app syncs with IoTiq’s cloud, and AI features are processed in the cloud only if you turn them on. This page explains what goes where.
Three Levels
What stays home, and what doesn’t.
It depends on the products and features you use. A package of devices on their own can stay entirely on your network; the IoTiq app and AI features need the internet.
Devices only: stays home
Devices connected to Home Assistant, Apple Home or Google Home, and cameras recording to local storage, keep their data on your network. The exception is any feature that uses the manufacturer’s own cloud, such as remote access to Google Nest or ecobee.
IoTiq app: synced through our cloud
To show your home in the app from anywhere, device states, activity history and commands pass through IoTiq’s servers. Automations still run locally in Home Assistant and keep working during an internet outage.
AI features: cloud, opt-in
IoTiq Intelligence (questions, automation suggestions and insights) needs the internet and processes data in the cloud. It is off unless you turn it on, and you can turn it off at any time.
Common Questions
What this means in practice.
Does IoTiq see my camera footage or sensor data?
Camera recordings stay on your camera or local recorder; watching them away from home sends the video over the internet to your phone. If you use the IoTiq app, sensor readings and device states are synced to IoTiq’s servers so the app can show them, and IoTiq support staff do not have standing access to your property. If you use devices without the IoTiq app, we don’t receive that data at all.
Is my data sold to advertisers or third parties?
No. IoTiq does not sell or rent personal information or device data to third parties. See our full Privacy Policy for details.
What happens to my automations if IoTiq’s servers go down?
Automations keep running locally in Home Assistant. The IoTiq app and mobile alerts are unavailable until our servers are back.
Does using a Matter or Zigbee device mean the manufacturer sees my data?
It depends on the device and how it’s paired. Zigbee and Matter devices paired to Home Assistant communicate with it over the local protocol; some devices may also phone home to their own manufacturer’s cloud independently of IoTiq. Check the manufacturer’s own privacy documentation for a device you’re considering.
Do you have a formal security certification?
IoTiq does not currently hold a third-party security certification (such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001), and the IoTiq app has not yet had an independent security review — one reason it is in early access only. We’ll update this page when that changes.
This page describes IoTiq’s architectural approach to data handling. For the legal specifics of what we collect and your rights, see our Privacy Policy.
