Why People Use It

A camera that only records isn’t watching anything.

Fewer pointless alerts.

Motion alerts fire for cars, snow and shadows. Recognition alerts you only when a person appears — and flags faces it doesn’t know.

Know who, not just “someone”.

Enrol family or staff once. Familiar faces are logged quietly; unfamiliar ones send you a clip.

Footage that stays yours.

Everything records to a recorder at your property. No cloud subscription to watch your own footage.

How It Works

Recognition happens at your property, not in a cloud.

1. Cameras watch the entrances

Positioned at face height where people actually arrive — doors, gates and the driveway.

2. The recorder recognises on-site

Face, person and vehicle detection run on the recorder at your property, even when the internet is down.

3. You hear about strangers, not leaves

Alerts reach your phone, and anyone you share them with, when someone unfamiliar appears.

  • Recorder: a local video recorder with an AI accelerator, running open-source recognition software. It connects to Home Assistant for alerts and automations.
  • Cameras: 4K network cameras powered through their network cable (PoE), so each camera needs one cable and no separate power outlet.
  • Recognition: face, person and vehicle detection run on the recorder. Face templates are stored on the recorder, not on an IoTiq server.
  • Storage: a surveillance hard drive in the recorder. When it fills, the oldest footage is overwritten automatically.
  • Remote access: an encrypted connection to your recorder when you view cameras away from home.
  • App: today, alerts and live view use the Home Assistant mobile app. The IoTiq app is in early access and is not required.

Outages

What happens if the internet or power goes out?

Straight answers, because this is exactly when you need the system to work.

SituationRecording & recognitionAlerts to your phone
Power and internet working✓ Recording and recognising✓ Yes
Internet down, power on✓ Keeps recording and recognising✕ Not until the internet returns
Power out✕ Stops unless battery backup is added✕ No
Power out, optional battery backup✓ Keeps recording for the backup’s runtime! Only if the router is also on backup power
One camera unplugged or damaged✓ Other cameras keep recording✓ Camera-offline alert
Footage doesn’t depend on the internet. Everything records to the recorder inside your property, so an internet outage doesn’t leave gaps. If you also want alerts during outages, add battery backup and a cellular router — both are listed under optional extras.

Manufacturer-backed hardware

Every device carries its manufacturer’s warranty. We tell you the warranty length for each one in your quote.

Alerts to you, not a call centre

IoTiq sends alerts to you and the people you choose. It is not a 24/7 monitoring service and does not dispatch police or emergency services.

IoTiq’s device testing programme is in progress. Devices are not labelled “IoTiq Verified” until physical testing is complete and documented. See current status →

Four questions to think about before you order

Not sure? That’s fine — we check them with you during the free assessment.

Which areas do you want covered?Front door, back door, driveway, garage, yard — each usually needs its own camera.

Can a cable reach each camera spot? Each camera needs one network cable. We plan the routes with you.

Where can the recorder live?A closet or shelf near your router, with a power outlet.

Will it see people outside your household?Staff, visitors or a public sidewalk mean privacy rules and signage apply.

Privacy & data handling

Face data — the photos you enrol and the templates made from them — and all recordings stay on the recorder at your property. Nothing is uploaded to an IoTiq server to recognise faces. Viewing cameras away from home uses an encrypted connection to your recorder. For businesses, Canadian privacy guidance expects a clear purpose, notice and consent before recognising staff or visitors; the 8-camera setup includes signage and a consent template. FAQ

Questions people ask about face recognition.

Is face recognition legal for a business in Canada?+−

It can be, with conditions. Canada’s privacy regulator expects a clear reason for using it, meaningful consent and a less intrusive alternative. We include signage and a consent template for business setups and recommend reviewing your use case before installation.

Where is face data stored?+−

On the recorder at your property. Nothing is uploaded to an IoTiq server to perform recognition.

Does it recognise people in hats, masks or at night?+−

Accuracy drops with masks, low hats, poor light and steep angles. It works best when people face the camera, which is why we place cameras at face height at entrances and test recognition during setup.

How long is footage kept?+−

It depends on the number of cameras and whether they record continuously or only on events. We size storage to the retention you want and confirm it in writing; the oldest footage is overwritten automatically.

Do I need a monthly subscription?+−

No. Recording, recognition and playback all work without a subscription.

Can I use cameras I already own?+−

Often, yes. Many standard network cameras can connect to the recorder. Send us the models and we’ll check before recommending anything new.
