Why Property Owners Use It
Empty buildings don’t complain when the heat goes off.
Before the pipes freeze.
An alert when any room drops toward freezing, while there’s still time to act.
Damp under control.
Spot damp basements early and run a dehumidifier automatically when humidity climbs.
A weekly “all OK”.
A short report that the property is fine — peace of mind between visits.
How It Works
Sensors in the cold spots, alerts on your phone.
Cottage
● All rooms above 5 °C
Lowest floor, crawl space, exterior walls and wherever pipes run.
Too cold, too damp, or water on the floor — each with its own alert.
A heater or dehumidifier on a smart plug switches on automatically.
View technical architecture
- Sensors: battery-powered Zigbee temperature and humidity sensors, plus water leak sensors with temperature readings.
- Controller: a small local computer running Home Assistant that checks limits and switches appliances on-site.
- Appliance control: an energy-monitoring smart plug for a portable heater or dehumidifier (check the appliance is rated for it).
- Backup: optional battery and cellular backup keep alerts flowing during power and internet outages.
- Report: a weekly summary of minimum and maximum readings, by email.
- App: today, alerts use the Home Assistant mobile app. The IoTiq app is in early access and is not required.

Four questions to think about before you order
Not sure? That’s fine — we check them with you during the free assessment.
Where are the coldest spots?Crawl spaces, exterior walls and unheated rooms with pipes.
Is the heat left on while it’s empty? Most freeze alerts are about heating that has stopped.
Is there internet at the property? If not, cellular backup can be the main connection.
Who can go check if an alert comes in?An alert only helps if someone can respond in time.
Privacy & data handling
Temperature, humidity and leak readings are stored on the controller at your property, not on an IoTiq server. Alerts and the weekly report reach you over the internet. No cameras or microphones are involved. How IoTiq handles data →
FAQ
Questions about freeze and humidity alerts.
Is a weekly report enough for my insurer’s vacancy rules?+−
Some policies require in-person checks for vacant homes. Check your policy; the report supports, but may not replace, those checks.
What temperature should trigger an alert?+−
Many owners use about 5 °C in the coldest room, which leaves time to act before pipes freeze. You choose the limit.
Can it turn the heat up remotely?+−
Yes, with a compatible smart thermostat or a heater on the included smart plug.
What about mould?+−
Humidity that stays high in a basement raises mould risk. You get an alert, and a dehumidifier can switch on automatically.
Does it work without internet?+−
Sensors and appliance control keep working; alerts need a connection. Cellular backup can provide one.
Is there a monthly fee?+−
No. The only optional ongoing cost is a data plan if you add cellular backup.
