Why Properties Use It
Remotes get lost. Fobs get copied. Plates don’t change.
No remote, no fob.
Residents and staff drive in. The gate opens because the plate is on the list.
Know which vehicles came and went.
Time, plate and a snapshot for every entry — searchable by date or plate.
Flag the vehicles you don’t want.
Add a plate to a block list and get an alert the moment it shows up.
How It Works
Plates are read at your gate, not in a cloud.
Garage Gate
● Camera online · gate closed
Positioned at the right angle and height for your entrance, with infrared for night.
Registered plates open the gate; visitor passes work for the day you set; blocked plates send an alert.
Time, plate and snapshot are stored on-site and searchable from your phone.
View technical architecture
- Camera: a 4K network camera with optical zoom and infrared, powered through its network cable (PoE).
- Recognition: a local video processor with an AI accelerator reads plates and matches them against your list, including partial matches for fleet vehicles.
- Gate control: a dry-contact relay triggers your existing gate, barrier or garage opener — the same way a remote button does.
- Storage: plate reads and snapshots are stored on the processor at your site; you set how long they are kept.
- Integration: plate events can trigger Home Assistant automations, such as lights on for arriving residents.
- App: today, the log and alerts use the Home Assistant mobile app. The IoTiq app is in early access and is not required.

Four questions to think about before you order
Not sure? That’s fine — we check them with you during the free assessment.
Does your gate or garage already have an opener? The system triggers it like a remote. If there’s no opener, we quote one.
Is there power and network near the entrance? The camera needs one network cable; we plan the route if not.
How do vehicles approach?Speed, angle and distance decide where the camera goes.
Who manages the plate list?A property manager, a board member or staff — we set up access for them.
Privacy & data handling
Plate reads, timestamps and snapshots are stored on the recogniser at your property, not on an IoTiq server. Licence plates can identify people, so Canadian privacy law treats them as personal information. We set a retention period with you, limit who can search the log, and recommend signage at the entrance before the system goes live. How IoTiq handles data →
FAQ
Questions about plate recognition.
Does it work at night and in snow?+−
The camera reads plates at night using infrared. Snow-covered, dirty or damaged plates can’t be read, and steep angles or fast vehicles reduce accuracy. We assess placement on-site and test in winter conditions.
Is the gate motor included?+−
No. The system triggers your existing gate, barrier or garage opener. If you don’t have one, we can quote a compatible motor.
What happens if a plate isn’t read?+−
The gate stays closed and the vehicle is logged with a snapshot. Residents can still use their remote or the call-box.
Are plate images sent to the cloud?+−
No. Plate reading and the log stay on equipment at your site.
Can visitors get temporary access?+−
Yes. Add a visitor plate for a day or a date range; it expires on its own.
Is it legal to record licence plates?+−
Yes, with care. Plates are personal information, so we recommend signage, a clear retention period and limited access to the log.
