Why Nova Scotians Use It

Nova Scotia estimates over a third of homes are above the guideline.

You can’t sense it.

Radon is an invisible, odourless gas that comes up from the ground. Measuring is the only way to know.

Levels change all the time.

Radon rises and falls with weather and season. Continuous monitoring shows the real long-term picture.

Know if mitigation works.

After a mitigation system is installed, ongoing readings confirm it keeps working.

1. Place it where you live

The lowest lived-in floor, away from drafts, windows and the sump.

2. Let it measure

Readings start within a day; long-term averages become meaningful over weeks and months.

3. Act on the average

Compare the long-term average with the guideline, and talk to a certified professional if it’s high.

  • Monitor: a battery-powered continuous radon monitor with its own app; batteries typically last over a year.
  • Readings: short-term and long-term averages in Bq/m³, the unit Health Canada uses.
  • Fan control: optional: a second monitor and a home controller running Home Assistant switch a fan or HRV when levels rise.
  • Guideline: the Canadian guideline for radon in homes is 200 Bq/m³.
  • Certified testing: for mitigation decisions, Health Canada recommends a long-term test with a certified measurement device; we refer you to certified professionals.
  • App: today, readings use the monitor’s own app, or Home Assistant with fan control. The IoTiq app is in early access and is not required.

Outages

What happens if the internet or power goes out?

Straight answers, because this is exactly when you need the system to work.

SituationRadon readingsAlerts & fan control
Everything working✓ Measuring continuously✓ Readings and alerts
Internet down✓ Keeps measuring and storing readings! Readings sync when back
Power out✓ Keeps measuring on battery! Fan control pauses without power
Short spike after a storm✓ Measured✓ Decisions use long-term averages
Mitigation fan stops working (with fan control)✓ Rising radon detected✓ Alert so you can check the fan
Short spikes are normal. Radon changes with weather and season, so decisions should be based on long-term averages, not a single day. A consumer monitor is excellent for ongoing tracking, but a certified long-term test is recommended before deciding on mitigation.

Know What You’re Getting

Clear about what it does — and what it doesn’t.

Your exact configuration, in writing

Manufacturer-backed hardware

Every device carries its manufacturer’s warranty. We tell you the warranty length for each one in your quote.

Tracking, not a certified test

A consumer monitor tracks levels over time. It isn’t a certified radon test and IoTiq doesn’t install mitigation systems — we refer you to certified professionals.

IoTiq’s device testing programme is in progress. Devices are not labelled “IoTiq Verified” until physical testing is complete and documented. See current status →

Four questions to think about before you order

Not sure? That’s fine — we check them with you during the free assessment.

Do you have a basement or crawl space?Monitors go on the lowest floor where people spend time.

Have you tested before?Previous results help us decide where to place the monitor.

Are you buying or selling? The 90-day rental gives a picture without buying a monitor.

Do you already have a mitigation system?Fan control and ongoing readings confirm it keeps working.

Privacy & data handling

Radon readings are stored on the monitor and in its app, or on the home controller with fan control — not on an IoTiq server. No cameras or microphones are involved. Reports go only to you, and to a professional or buyer if you choose to share them. How IoTiq handles data →
