Why Homeowners Use It
Water damage is the most common home insurance claim in Canada.
Every risk point covered.
Sensors beside the water heater and washer, under sinks and near the floor drain.
The water turns itself off.
When a sensor detects water, the valve closes your main supply — you don’t have to be home.
Freeze warnings too.
Each sensor also reports temperature, so you hear about a cold basement before a pipe bursts.
How It Works
Detected and shut off at home, in seconds.
Water
● All dry · main valve open
Small battery-powered sensors on the floor at each risk point.
The moment one gets wet, the controller closes the main valve — no internet needed.
You get the alert, check the problem, and reopen the valve from your phone.
View technical architecture
- Leak sensors: battery-powered Zigbee water sensors with temperature readings; batteries typically last a year or more.
- Valve: a Canadian-made motorised valve on the main supply line, installed by a licensed plumber.
- Controller: a small local computer running Home Assistant that closes the valve the moment any sensor detects water.
- Offline: detection and shut-off run on-site, so they work during an internet outage.
- Valve exercise: the valve can be opened and closed on a schedule so it doesn’t seize.
- App: today, alerts and valve control use the Home Assistant mobile app. The IoTiq app is in early access and is not required.

Know What You’re Getting
Clear about what it does — and what it doesn’t.
Your exact configuration, in writing
Before you order, your quote lists every device, its quantity, where it goes and which features it supports.
Manufacturer-backed hardware
Every device carries its manufacturer’s warranty. We tell you the warranty length for each one in your quote.
Early warning, not a guarantee
It catches water that reaches a sensor and shuts the supply. It can’t detect leaks inside walls or prevent all damage.
Setup
From your first question to a working system.
Tell us about your home. Water heater, appliances, bathrooms, basement and where the main valve is.
Receive your configuration. Sensor locations, valve size, plumber visit and total cost — in writing.
Install and connect. A licensed plumber fits the valve; you place the sensors with our guidance.
Wet test every sensor. We put water on each sensor and confirm the valve closes and the alert arrives.
30-day follow-up. We check batteries, valve behaviour and the insurer summary with you.
Four questions to think about before you order
Not sure? That’s fine — we check them with you during the free assessment.
Where is your main water shut-off?A photo of the valve and pipe helps us choose the right size.
How many fixtures and appliances use water? Each risk point gets its own sensor.
Do you live in a condo? The valve usually goes on your unit’s supply; we check what your building allows.
Is the home often empty?Add battery backup so shut-off still works during power cuts.
Privacy & data handling
Leak status, temperature readings and valve history are stored on the controller in your home, not on an IoTiq server. Alerts reach your phone over the internet. The written water protection summary is shared only with whoever you choose, such as your insurer. How IoTiq handles data →
FAQ
Questions about leak detection and shut-off.
Who installs the valve?+−
A licensed plumber installs the valve on your main water line. We coordinate it and include the cost in your written quote.
Will my insurance premium go down?+−
Some Canadian insurers offer discounts for leak detection and automatic shut-off, sometimes with a minimum number of sensors. Ask your insurer; we provide a written summary of what’s installed.
Does it work without internet?+−
Yes. Detection and shut-off run on the controller at home. Phone alerts need a connection.
Does it work in a condo?+−
Usually, yes. The valve goes on your unit’s supply line; we confirm what your building allows.
Can it find leaks inside walls?+−
No. Sensors detect water that reaches them, so we place them at the lowest point near each fixture.
How do I turn the water back on?+−
From your phone once the problem is fixed, or with the manual handle on the valve.
